Eyeing the petrol hike

Tips on Filling your Vehicles...
This is a Message received from a friend:
I don't know what you guys are paying for petrol... but here
in Durban, we are also paying higher, up to 47.35 per litre.
But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now,
so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth
for every litre.
Here at the Marian Hill Pipeline, where I work in Durban, we
deliver about 4 million litres in a 24-hour period thru the
pipeline.
One day is diesel; the next day is jet fuel, and petrol, LRP
and Unleaded. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total
capacity of 16,800,000 litres.
ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR CAR OR BIKKIE IN THE
EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS
STILL COLD. Remember that all service stations have their
storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground,
the denser the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so
buying in the afternoon or in the evening.... your litre is not
exactly a litre.
In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the
temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and
other petroleum products play an important role. A
1degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business.
But the service stations do not have temperature
compensation at the pumps.
WHEN YOU'RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE
TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE. If you look,
you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low,
middle, and high. In slow mode, you should be pumping on
low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are
created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump
have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate,
some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour.
Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the
underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for
your money.
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS IS TO FILL UP
WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL. The reason for this is,
the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying
its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can
imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating
roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol
and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.
Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that
we load is temperature compensated, so that every litre is
actually the exact amount.
ANOTHER REMINDER, IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK
PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP
TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP - most likely the petrol/diesel is
being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you
might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the
bottom.
Hope, this will help you get the maximum value for your
money.

Eyeing the Earthquake in China

There were so many touching stories from the Wen Chuan earthquake. I cried so many times watching the news coverage in the past week. But this forward from a friend has to rank as one of the most touching. As a salute to this mom, I have translated the original into English, so my non-Chinese-speaking friends could read it, and pass it around, too. It's a story that should not stay only within the Chinese community.
from: Violet

When rescuers found her, she was already dead, crushed by the collapsed house. Through gaps in the rubbles, they could see her posture.
Kneeling on both knees, her entire upper body bent forward, held up by her two hands pressed against the ground, as if performing the ceremonial bow in an ancient ritual. Except, her body had been compressed out of shape and looked somewhat eerie.

A rescuer extended his hand through a gap and confirmed her death. He called out to her, and tapped on the bricks with his shaft, but received no response.

As the team walked toward next building, the squad leader suddenly turned back, yelling as he ran, "Come quick!" He came to her remain, labored to maneuver his hand under her body, searching.

He called out following some rummaging, "There's someone, a child, still alive."

With some effort, rescuers carefully removed the debris burying her, found her child lying beneath her, bundled in a little red blanket decorated with yellow flower prints. He was about 3-4 months old.

Shielded by his mother's body , he was totally unharmed, sleeping peacefully as he was brought out. His soundly asleep face warmed the hearts of all rescuers on the scene.

As the rescue team's doctor unbundled the blanket to examine the baby, he discovered a mobile phone tucked into the blanket. He subconsciously looked at the display, found there was a SMS message.
"亲爱的宝贝,如果你能活着,一定要记住我爱你",看惯了生离死别的医生却在这一刻落泪了,手机传递着,每个看到短信的人都落泪了
"My Dear Baby, If you were to stay alive, you must remember that I love you." No stranger to the pain and sorrow brought by death, the doctor nonetheless wept at this moment. The cell phone was passed around, every person who read the message wept.

Eyeing the Golf scene

Honestly, why are drivers $600 and a round of golf at a good course
is over $100? And why do the balls cost $40 per dozen?

I mean, sometimes I think that the golf industry is clueless and
here's why.

They think everyone who plays golf makes over $100k and is
"affluent". That we all drive Porsche's and have $100 bills
spewing from our pockets ready to spend on some shirt in the pro
shop that's $80 when you can get it at Target for $19.99.

But ever since Tiger came along the sport is more diverse than ever,
especially when it comes to economic status.

Truth is, golf ain't doin' so well as a sport and I think it's time
they shifted their thinking.

If we want the sport to prosper, the golf industry needs to make
the game appeal more to the masses rather than this smaller
perceived group of "affluents".

Here's how...

First, do a reality check on pricing. I mean, really, is Pebble
Beach worth $450 to play or that Driver worth $600? Just be
realistic about what you charge and stop the price gouging. It's a
turn-off for new golfers and creates an unnecessary barrier to
enter the sport.

And second, make instruction more available to the average golfer.
If a golfer can learn the proper fundamentals, etiquette, SPEED OF
PLAY!, he/she will be much more likely to enjoy the sport, become
better at it and be devoted to the sport for life.
