Eyeing Zaid Ibrahim's explaination

 [8/19, 17:38] +60 12-390 3888: PRESS STATEMENT

BY DATUK ZAID IBRAHIM

I wish to make this press statement as there have been numerous queries from the media to me as to why my law firm, Zaid Ibrahim Suflan TH Liew & Partners (ZIST) were discharged by Dato’ Sri Najib Razak as solicitors on record for his ongoing appeals in the SRC International matter before the Federal Court.

This morning, lead counsel, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, informed the Federal Court that my law firm has been discharged.

I confirm that this decision was made by Dato’ Sri Najib with my full support and agreement.

As I understand it, Dato’ Sri Najib’s decision was prompted by his belief that his lawyers cannot serve any useful purpose as lawyers for him anymore in the ongoing hearing relating to the appeals in the Federal Court.

Dato’ Sri Najib believes that the prevailing assumption of the judges is that the reorganisation of his legal team towards the end of last month was part of a tactical ploy and a ruse to stifle and stall proceedings so as to avoid or delay the final judgment and sentence to be passed on him or for political reasons.

As a politician myself, I can confirm that this unfortunate assumption is furthest from the truth.

As a lawyer, and who was asked to assist Dato’ Sri Najib in this matter, I have seen materials and the papers to state categorically that the fresh evidence that he was seeking to admit would have had a nuclear effect on the issue of Justice Nazlan Ghazali’s conflict of interest and apparent bias in being the Trial Judge and passing Judgment and sentence on Dato’ Sri Najib.

I regret that despite the best efforts of lead counsel, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, and the lawyers in my team both from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, we have not been able to dispel this sad misconception.

The fact that Dato’ Sri Najib may have just been seeking justice appears to have been uncharitably disregarded.

The decision for me and my Firm to accept this Brief rested primarily on our view that Dato’ Sri Najib’s case called for a new approach and fresh perspectives. It also required him to abandon unnecessarily vitriolic matters and personal attacks on Justice Nazlan who had presided over the trial.

Instead, we were intent on focusing strictly on the legal and factual issues surrounding the case, concentrating especially on the issues of bias and conflict of interests.

We believe from an objective analysis of the facts of the case that the evidence was overwhelmingly in Dato’ Sri Najib’s favour.

In order to ensure that the application to adduce fresh evidence was properly and strongly put forward before the Court, I consulted my friend and colleague in Singapore, Niru Pillai of Niru & Co LLC. I know that Niru can bring added value and would be a very good architect to bring completely different perspectives to any difficult cases. Niru put together a team in his Firm to assist ZIST. He also then reached out to take independent advice from leading counsel in criminal law and in the current situation facing the application to adduce the fresh evidence and the appeals.

Given Niru’s vast network of professional relationships in India with leading lights and doyens in the Indian legal profession, Niru sought out 2 very established leading Senior Advocates, Sidharth Luthra and Kavin Gulati.

Niru officially briefed them and the Indian Legal Team was put together with Rony John and Avi Tandon assisting.

In my view, this was a great team and I can confirm that Dato’ Sri Najib was extremely pleased with its work.

We believed that the application was well founded and was very compelling. Unfortunately, the Court in its wisdom did not think so. The application was not allowed.

Even Dato’ Sri Najib’s request for a short adjournment to enable our legal team to properly get up the case, and for counsel to adequately prepare his submissions and arguments for what is clearly an extremely complex and high-profile case, was denied outright.

In the short four weeks since we were engaged, we have painstakingly perused the relevant appeal records, reviewed substantial affidavits, carried out extensive research on the law, prepared the final response affidavits and filed extensive written submissions. This was a monumental and herculean task on its own, given the short period within which we had to be ready because the Court refused to even adjourn the applications, let alone the appeals.

We had even prepared a fresh motion to seek a Review of the Federal Court’s decision to deny Dato’ Sri Najib’s application to adduce fresh evidence. This has not been filed.

We are more than satisfied that we have done our utmost best for Dato’ Sri Najib.

It is beyond belief that the highest Court in the land would deny Dato’ Sri Najib the right to adduce relevant material and necessary evidence to ensure that the truth is established and justice is done. The application was to show how manifestly egregious was the conflict of interest on the part of Justice Nazlan. In my view, the Judge was clearly biased. He had no business being the Trial Judge in the SRC matter. It is clear to us that the setback which Dato’ Sri Najib has suffered is a grave injustice arising from a manifest error of law and certainly derailed all efforts to pursue his constitutional rights that he is entitled to.

We recognize and accept that Dato’ Sri Najib is at a critical point in the legal timeline of his SRC case, and with his personal liberty at stake, we accept graciously his decision to discharge us.

We understand perfectly well that he must do what is best for himself.

I stand by my earlier statement that my Firm will never abandon Dato’ Sri Najib as our client, or any other client. That is neither our culture nor tradition. Nonetheless, the exigencies of the current exceptional circumstances and situation impel us to be mindful of the needs of the client. The client’s interest is paramount. I wish Dato’ Sri Najib the very best. I will always be there to help him in any situation, as a lawyer and a friend.

I have learnt many things over the last few weeks.  For instance, I did not know that lawyers in criminal cases must get permission from the courts to discharge themselves, which I believe is a startling new legal proposition.  Neither did I appreciate that inflexibility and rigidity were essential ingredients of justice.  I always thought the foremost ingredients of justice were fairness, reasonableness and compassion and that these took precedence over administrative efficiency.

On a personal note, I learnt who my real friends are.  Retired judge Mahadev Shanker ranks very highly among them, and I thank him for his kind words to me in recent times.

Not, though, are those who besmirched my character because my work has sometimes involved in taking up unpopular causes.

Nonetheless, I will always remain to be determined not to be shaken off my core beliefs. I will always fight for justice, whether for the ordinary man or for the King. In doing so, I will also want to ensure that justice is not only done but also seen to be done.

No one can stop me from pursuing what I believe truly in my heart and mind. The law has been my passion and helping others has been my calling.

I intend to keep calm and carry on.

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim

Eyeing Azrul Abu Hasan's view

Eyeing Malaysian Justice by Romen Bose

 https://www.facebook.com/111513788055529/posts/pfbid0bYZmZtmP7uPG72xj1YX9CHDfnkJA1QpUNzR9egwnXSY9SGzM81L2Qrw62ZNARGPil/?sfnsn=mo

Is this really Justice?

I’ve had it.

I have been following the ongoing saga of Datuk Seri Najib’s SRC International trial and how it has been rushed over the last four years (fyi, Anwar’s Sodomy II trial took six and a half years) but I have not made any comments because of my belief in the independence and integrity of the Malaysian judiciary and in the honourable men and women who interpret and deliver judgements based on the laws of the land.

So, I was silent when the Court of Appeal dismissed new evidence allegedly showing that the husband of former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, was allegedly in cahoots with Jho Low in the 1MDB scandal, a relationship the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) effectively confirmed in November 2021 when it said that as part of its recovery of 1MDB assets, Singaporean authorities had repatriated US$15.4 million to the Malaysian Government that had been seized from a company owned by Zeti’s husband.

Given Singapore’s robust banking, investigative and legal systems, I don’t think they would have seized and repatriated funds if they did not have proof that it was related to funds siphoned from 1MDB.

Mind you, Zeti’s reassurances was why Najib did not seem panicked when I spoke to him a day after the Wall Street Journal exposed the 1MDB scandal in 2015. As he told me then, he had been assured by Zeti that it was fine to open bank accounts in his own name and to have the US$643.41 million transferred in. Yet, despite giving Najib these assurances in 2012, Zeti then in 2018 publicly denied knowing anything about it.

She said: "In fact, on 3 July 2015, I was called to the Prime Minister`s office. He made a request for me to issue a statement that he had done nothing wrong in his account. I informed him that I cannot issue such a statement because I did not have knowledge of transactions that had occurred in his account."

Funnily enough, I believe the MACC had investigated Zeti in 2018/2019 and had even submitted a report to the AGC (i.e. the guys who were already prosecuting Najib) showing that not only was Zeti fully aware of the monies flowing into Najib’s account but that her husband was allegedly hiding his and her children’s ill-gotten gains in Singapore.

From this, I believe Zeti had lied about the various 1MDB-linked funds transfers. Whether it was from 1MDB, KWAP or SRC is academic. If she lied about this, then one has to call into question BNM’s involvement and awareness of the various other fund transfers.

The biggest question that I thought the judges would be asking was, “Why did Zeti not make Najib aware of any ‘suspicious’ transactions?” I would think US$643.41 million would qualify as a suspicious transaction. Could it be because she was fully aware of these transactions but kept quiet because she knew her husband was being paid handsomely by Jho Low? Or was it because, when the scandal broke, she realised the only way to save herself was to deny any knowledge of the transactions?

I would have thought that would have been enough doubt for the judges to see that Najib would have very likely been unaware of any impropriety in regard to the funds coming into his account (whether from SRC or not) as he relied on the promises of the then central bank governor (and other trusted advisors who we now know were also on Jho Low’s payroll) whose duty was to also warn him if anything improper had occurred, and who has now been shown to have lied about her knowledge and actions regarding the siphoned 1MDB-related funds.

I was also silent when the Federal Court said the Court of Appeal was correct in dismissing this new evidence. The Chief Justice laid down circumstances where further evidence could be adduced, namely that the evidence must not have been made available during the trial proper, that it is relevant and credible, and that it would have raised reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury or trial judge in arriving at the decision of a case.

Ok, I am not a lawyer, but isn’t an MACC report that effectively proves that the head of Malaysia’s financial regulator at the time of all these transactions (including that of the SRC funds) had lied about her involvement and knowledge of the transactions (and who knows what else?), constitute as relevant and credible? And would this not have raised a reasonable doubt in the mind of anyone as to whether there was a greater conspiracy linking the 1MDB and SRC charges against Najib?

And shouldn’t the judges also have asked themselves why the prosecution (whom I believe were made aware of the MACC report back in 2018/2019) did not the make the report public, but rather chose to quietly drop Zeti as a prosecution witness without giving any explanation?

I was also silent when the Bar Council held a protest to condemn the MACC’s investigation into trial Judge Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazali, following allegations of an unexplained sum of 1 million ringgit in his bank account and the fact that Nazlan had failed to disclose his role, involvement, or knowledge in the setting up of SRC International although he had served as the general counsel and company secretary for the Maybank Group in 2006.

In a summary of his High Court judgement, Nazlan allegedly stated: “…the approval for the establishment of SRC by the accused (Najib) provided the true starting point for the involvement of the accused in the company.”

Now, anonymous whistle-blowers have sent Najib a cache of minutes of Maybank meetings and emails (if proven authentic) showing that Nazlan, not only served as the general counsel for Maybank but also allegedly attended meetings where the bank recommended the setting up of SRC in the first place. As such, Nazlan was privy to matters which went to the heart of Najib’s defence in the SRC trial.

More interestingly, some of these documents also indicate the MACC, during its investigations of Nazlan earlier this year, had asked the judge about his involvement in the various Maybank meetings.

In his affidavit last week to adduce the new evidence, Najib said that he has been “made to understand that when asked by the MACC officer of his knowledge/involvement …, Justice Nazlan initially denied having any knowledge …, but only after being confronted with email threads and documents by the MACC officers (did Nazlan admit) that he was indeed involved.”

So, now, not only is there strong evidence that the then governor of the central bank had lied about her involvement in the 1MDB linked funds transferred into Najib’s accounts, but that the High Court judge who had convicted Najib on seven charges of abuse of power and misappropriation of RM42 million funds belonging to SRC, had himself also allegedly been caught lying to investigators about his involvement in the setting up of SRC and deliberations on a RM4.17 billion loan to 1MDB.

In 2018, the Bar Council had demanded that the initial SRC trial judge Mohd Sofian Abd Razak recuse himself as he was the younger brother of Pahang state executive councillor and Benta Umno state assemblyperson Mohd Soffi Abdul Razak. Bar President George Varughese said then: “The rule of law demands that justice must not only be done but it must manifestly be seen to be done.”

However, when it was shown that, the current SRC trial judge was intimately involved in the setting up of SRC and appears to have lied to investigators, the Bar Council remains silent.

It is convenient to say that one was not aware of the situation at the time of the trial but now that you are aware of it, what action will you take?

Shouldn’t you be demanding for a mistrial because the Bar Council believes that, “justice must not only be done but it must manifestly be seen to be done” in this instance as well? Or is there a double standard going on here?

But it was the Federal Court’s decision last Friday not to allow Najib’s newly constituted legal team more time to go through the evidence and prepare for his case, despite just being handed all this new evidence to sift through and prepare, that really takes the cake.

Here you have potential evidence that the country’s top financial regulator lied about her knowledge, role and involvement in the 1MDB related funds that went into Najib’s account and you also have potential evidence that the trial judge who convicted Najib, was caught lying to investigators about his involvement in the very company that Najib is accused of stealing from.

And none of these details were provided to Najib (even though I believe the prosecution would have likely seen the MACC report on Zeti) and it was only because of anonymous whistle-blowers who wanted to see justice prevail, that these documents have only now come to light. So far, no one has questioned or even impeached the authenticity or credibility of any of these documents.

And we refuse to give a few weeks more to Najib to prepare for proper submissions before you?

I may not be a lawyer, but even I understand the concept of natural justice. this is not it.

Eyeing Najib’s rebuttal

Petronas dijarah RM80 bilion manakala RM30 bilion aset bersih Khazanah lesap ketika PH memerintah.

"Feb 2020: Dr M: Govt to tap RM2 trillion 'war chest'"

https://www.nst.com.my/business/2020/02/569993/dr-m-govt-tap-rm2-trillion-war-chest

Ya. RM2 trilion.

Eyeing Najib's contention

 https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0fjrpv6J7K6fsUtBjppByfGQjE9KQKaxhcVJW1fHrmS7dMqo3a4aZ4kTTgvXZFuT7l&id=100044428416531&sfnsn=mo

One of the key propaganda messages most used by PH and PN against me is that Malaysia's financial health and debt were getting worse when I was Prime Minister.

I still read many comments from their supporters expressing this.

Actually, the reverse is true and I want to set the record straight so that you are no longer deceived by PH.

When I was PM, the government deficit was reduced for 8 consecutive years (bottom chart) but became bigger again after GE14.

As a result, government debt increased from RM688.6 billion as at end 2017 before GE14 to RM1.05 trillion as of 1st quarter 2022 - a  staggering 46.5% increase in less than 4 years.

As a result, the debt to GDP ratio for Malaysia was also reduced every year and reached 48.7% as at Q1 2018 just before GE14 - way below the statutory limit of 55% that the BN government set for itself.

Post GE14, the debt to GDP ratio increased again under the PH and PN government.

The statutory debt limit was then raised twice to 60% and then to 65%.

Since GE14, the debt to GDP ratio has jumped from 48.7% to 62% as at end 2022.

Both the government deficit and debt to GDP ratio would have been higher if PH did not then excessively raid the RM176b cash reserves of Petronas left behind by the BN government compared to the RM30b cash when I started as PM.

Imagine that in the year 2019 alone, PH took RM54 billion from Petronas.

(Imagine this: They can just take RM54 billion in one year alone from Petronas and yet they tell you that Malaysia will go bankrupt due to 1MDB's RM32 billion debt which was only needed to be paid by year 2039?

On the contrary, 1MDB's RM140b Bandar Malaysia and the RM40b TRX projects alone would have generated more than enough cashflow as it is gradually developed to pay for the RM32 billion and still generate tens of billions in profit for the government).

"March 2019: (Updated) Petronas to pay RM54 billion dividend to govt"

https://www.nst.com.my/business/2019/03/467229/updated-petronas-pay-rm54-billion-dividend-govt

Despite both the government deficit and debt to GDP ratio reducing for 8 consecutive years, the BN government was still able to build all sorts of large public infrastructure projects such as MRT, LRT1 and LRT2 extensions, the toll-free Central Spine Road highway, the toll-free Pan Borneo Highway, introduce various forms of aid including introducing BR1M at RM500 in 2012 which was then raised almost every year to RM2,000 by year 2018.

The share market doesn't lie. That is why the share market more than doubled during the 9 years I was PM and reached its highest ever level at 1896 points in April 2018 just before GE14.

And this is why people like Kit Siang would not dare debate me about such stuff as these are all facts and figures. Should they be confronted, they will be forced to admit they have been lying.

Eyeing Malaysia's PM on HALAL

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh, Salam Sejahtera dan Salam Keluarga Malaysia.

“Aplikasi Konsep Halalan Toyyiban di Malaysia Sebagai Model Pembentukan Amalan Terbaik Industri Ekonomi Halal Global”

38. Berdasarkan laporan Global Islamic Economy Report (2016/2017 hingga 2020/2021), Malaysia menduduki peringkat pertama daripada segi skor petunjuk ekonomi Islam global. Bahkan, Malaysia menunjukkan prestasi teratas dalam sektor kewangan Islam.

Sekian, terima kasih.

Wabillahi taufik walhidayah

*A Ranking of 12 Most Evil Rapist in Malaysia*

Who are the most evil and corrupt men and women in Malaysia? Here is a listing of the Dirty Dozen, ranked in order of how evil the person is and his effect on society. The more evil the person and the more damaging his effect on society, the higher up the scale they go. Besides the top dog, the list includes his dark knights installed in every powerful institution that is meant to protect and uphold democracy in the land. From the Attorney-General to the Chief Justice, judges, the ACA, the Election Commission and the police force, there is no institution which has not been corrupted by Mahathir. As Tunku Abdul Rahman said after the sacking of the Lord President Tun Salleh Abas, we are all in grave danger.

 *1. Mahathir Mohamed*

 *The Father of Corruption*

As the most dictatorial prime minister ever, this man certainly tops the list of most evil persons in Malaysia. He has practically destroyed all the institutions of democracy in Malaysia including the independence of the judiciary and there are no more checks and balances to his power. Concepts like justice, democracy and human rights mean little to him and he is comfortable hobnobbing with brutal regimes like Myanmar and Cuba. Corruption and cronyism flourish under his rule to an extent never before seen. Like a leader who corrupts all those under him, most of the people holding high office in the country are corrupt and beholden to him. The hallmark of Mahathir's rule is that corrupt men and women do not have to pay the price of their corruption as long as they remain loyal to him. An egomaniac who expounds large construction projects to cover his lack of spiritual values, he channeled the resources of the country into economically senseless mega projects to feed his ego and his cronies' pockets. Slowly but surely Mahathir's rule of corruption, cronyism and public-milking privatization is lowering the standard of living in Malaysia and making life harder for the ordinary citizen who must pay the ever increasing corruption tax. He will forever be remembered for his cruel and inhuman treatment of his deputy Anwar Ibrahim whom he jailed after Stalin and Hitler style show trials.

 *2. Daim Zainuddin*

A rapacious robber baron whose greed is boundless

His low profile belie the immense power he wields in his hands and he has used his power to amass fabulous wealth. Never ever satisfied, this rapacious robber baron seems to want everything. A brazen attempt to force merge the country's banks to increase his share of banking assets to dangerous levels was aborted only because Umno needed Chinese votes win the elections. However billions of ringgit in frozen Clob shares fell prey to his greed when badly treated foreign investors had to pay him a cut to get their shares released. His economic plunder helps to keep the Mahathir regime in power and fuel the money politics that the party machinery runs on. Daim's lust for money is equal in intensity  to Mahathir's lust for power. With the number one man in the country power crazy and the number two man money mad, the country is in "good" hands.

 *3. Mohtar Abdullah*

A legal thug best describes this totally repulsive man

For sheer gusto in carrying out Mahathir's nefarious designs, Mohtar Abdullah has no equal. In fact this most repulsive Attorney-General in Malaysia's history doesn't need orders from the top to go on a legal rampage, he sometimes pursue political opponents relentlessly on his own initiative. He turned the office of the A-G into a dictator's tool of oppression to drag to court perceived political critics and enemies. With the Chief Justice to select the proper judge to hear the case, he just can't lose. Lim Guan Eng felt brunt of his legal thuggery for merely criticizing his non-action over the statutory rape of a schoolgirl by powerful politician Rahim Thamby Chik. Datuk Nallakarupan was charged with mandatory death penalty for forgetting to renew his license for 100 lousy bullets because his life was to be used as a bargaining chip to fabricate evidence against Anwar. Mohtar's zeal in prosecuting politically unfavoured persons is matched by his stony inaction to go after really corrupt big shots. This evil man is not above fabricating evidence to secure convictions when real evidence is hard to come by in cases where innocent people are dragged to court.  Mohtar is evil without conscience, a perverter who turns good and bad on its head landing hammer blows on society's  moral shell with every politically motivated prosecution. Although Eusoff Chin's perversion of the rule of law is greater than Mohtar due to Eusoff's Chief Justice position, Mohtar has been ranked above him in evil due to his extraordinary enthusiasm in committing injustice and wickedness to serve the dictator and further his own worldly ambition.

 *4. Eusoff Chin*

He sat on the bench to ensure its subservience to Mahathir

When the country's Chief Justice is corrupt what can you expect of the judicial system? Eusoff Chin has been photographed holidaying in New Zealand with highly successful lawyer V.K. Lingam who has never lost a case in Eusoff Chin's court. But Eusoff's corruption goes has a far more sinister and damaging effect than mere personal enrichment. He is used by Mahathir to select suitable judges to hear important cases and to lean on judges to deliver the "correct" judgement. Any judge whose judgement displease Eusoff is bound to find himself packing for a posting in a backwater place and his career immediately stunted. Under this shady perverter of justice the judiciary has won a smelly reputation locally and abroad as being thoroughly compliant to the executive. With Eusoff at the helm the government has never lost an important case. But for Mahathir, having Mokhtar as Attorney-General and Eusoff Chin as Chief Justice is a dream come true and a combination not likely to be exceeded in future.

 *5. Kadir Jasin*

His newspapers were the propaganda machine of the ruling party

Kadir Jasin does not hold any high office to directly corrupt the institutions of democracy but as Group Managing Director of the New Straits Times Press, his role in corrupting minds is far-reaching indeed. In the dung filled pages of the New Straits Times and Berita Harian, this sycophantic editor who once called for foreign journalist to be arrested under ISA for reporting the truth tried to mould public opinion by hiding the excesses of the ruling party and heaping undeserved praise on corrupt leaders to keep them in power. The strategies used include biased opinion pieces, omission of all negative reporting of the establishment, public airing of unsubstantiated allegations against political opponents without right of reply, sycophantic adulation of the prime minister, reporting only the negative points of the opposition and playing them up, outright lying and filtering foreign viewpoints for the favourable comments only. By covering up abuses and protecting the guilty from public exposure the mass media helps to perpetuate and deepen abuses and corruption. Kadir Jasin was certainly at the forefront of this information web of deceit until he was sacked by his political masters for not being sycophantic enough and daring to lose market share by feeding intelligent readers with politically motivated rubbish.

 *6. Augustine Paul*

A monster judge rode roughshod over all principles of jurisprudence to convict Anwar

Augustine Paul was handpicked to do a specific dirty job, that is to find Anwar Ibrahim guilty of some fanciful trumped-up charges. Anxious not to disappoint his political masters on his first important assignment, he proceed to trample truth and justice in his courtroom in the crudest possible manner in his overzealous mission to convict the fallen politician. He ran a banal kangaroo court which was so blatantly biased that it will forever shame the nation in the eyes of the world. His parody of justice evoked memories of the infamous show trials of Stalin and Hitler.

The evil of a man who is willing to send an innocent man to jail cannot be glossed over. One may argue that Augustine Paul was a puppet judge who had no choice. This is a false rationalization as he would never have been selected as a puppet judge if he wasn't rotten to the core and trusted to give the pre-determined judgement. He could have exercised his independence once on the case and there would be nothing that Mahathir can do to remove him without triggering world outrage. But why was Paul selected to grace this rogues' gallery instead of Lamin Yunus although he (Paul) has been known to betray justice in only one celebrated case while Lamin is an old government dog with a string of biased judgements to his name? And shouldn't Ariffin Jaka share the limelight? The fact is that the repercussion from Paul's evil deed was greater than Lamin's as he robbed the nation of a great leader who would have brought some morality, transparency and justice back into the government. Ariffin Jaka at least conducted the semblance of a real trial allowing all material evidence to be heard, even those highly embarrassing to his political masters. The way that Paul bulldozed the flimsy prosecution's case through while suppressing material evidence from being aired speaks of a pure unadulterated evil that makes the skin crawl. He held the future of the nation in his hands but he chose to sell his soul to the devil for a pittance.

 *7. Omar Mohammad*

With a corrupt man at the helm, the last bastion of democracy fell to Mahathir

The name of Datuk Omar Mohammad does not ring a bell to most people and this is understandable as he is the Chairman of the Election Commission which comes to the fore to conduct the general elections every 5 years. But although  rarely in the news, this is one of the most important instrument of democracy. When all checks and balances have been removed in the administration of government, the general election is the last bastion of democracy and the final check and balance to a power hungry dictator. It is the time when power returns to the people who can theoretically kick out an unjust government in free and fair elections.

This is in theory but the sad reality is that even the Election Commission has been corrupted by Mahathir. Datuk Omar's declaration the Commission is independent rings hollow in the light of the 1999 general elections. In the first place gerry mandering of electoral boundaries to concentrate parliamentary seats in areas of greater support ensured that it would be very difficult to topple the ruling party. The 1999 elections was anything but free and fair. A massive 650,000 newly registered voters who were generally perceived as critical of the government were not allowed to vote on the shaky premise that it took the EC a mind boggling nine months to register them. The EC also failed to correct the total monopoly of the mass media by the ruling party, the unfair media blitz and the stirring of racial and religious fears by Barisan Nasional politicians to garner votes. The Election Commission failed the people and as its head, Omar Mohammad must be held responsible for the fall of the last bastion of democracy.

 *8. Ahmad Zaki Husin*

An agency to flush out corruption or to clean the corrupt?

Ahmad Zaki is the Director-General of the Anti-Corruption Agency. Under Mahathir this body has become severely degraded in the eyes of the public as a blindfold toothless tiger when it comes to going after the big fish. Instead of fearlessly pursuing and exposing corruption without fear or favour this agency seems to drag its feet when big shots are involved. Worse, the ACA has frequently been abused as a weapon to investigate and pull down political opponents of the ruling party. To add insult to injury, we now have corrupt slimy politicians using the ACA to claim themselves pristine after a "cleansing investigation" by the agency.

The ACA's most celebrated failure is its inability to conclude investigations into the Perwaja Steel case and bring charges against Tan Sri Eric Chia who lost frightening billions for the steel giant under suspicious circumstances. This is despite a devastating auditor's report which detailed fraudulent financial transactions with dummy companies. After four years of "investigation", one should not hold one's breath that Eric Chia will be brought to justice anytime soon. It also sank into a listless stupor over Anwar's four police reports with documented evidence against political bigwigs. On the other hand the ACA suddenly sprang to life over Datuk Murad's wild and unsubstantiated allegations of billions in Anwar's "master accounts" although to date it has managed to dig up nothing. Other high profile cases of corruption such as Eusoff Chin's well-known holiday with lawyer V.K. Lingam never saw the light of day although pictures of their fond relationship have been on the internet for years.

Why is Ahmad Zaki ranked one step below Omar Muhammad on the scale of evil? Corruption is after all an insidious cancer which affects everybody and happens far more frequently than general elections. The ordinary citizen pays the price of big time corruption in higher prices of utilities and goods and the wastage of public funds. But one must remember that the ACA reports to the Attorney-General and the Prime Minister now, not directly to parliament. This means that it derives the corruption of the overlords it is subservient to. When the PM wants to sit on a case of prima facie corruption, there is nothing much that the Director-General can do while other entities such as the Election Commission, the A-G , the Chief Justice and the judges can exercise their independence but choose to sell their souls to the devil. Still, one cannot be too lenient on Ahmad Zaki. Anyone who is contend to sit in a post and willingly play along inflicting harm onto society must himself be a member of the dark domain.

 *9. Ling Liong Sik*

He is the epitome of village headman bought over with money and whisky to keep the natives in line

As the most useless leader ever to do nothing for the people he represents, Ling Liong Sik has no equal. This political hack is only interested in maintaining the status quo while he goes about the serious business of gathering wealth. And what an embarrassment of riches it has been with his son coming from nowhere to be an instant billionaire at the age of 27. On issues affecting the Chinese, you will not find this timorous leader speaking out whether it is the Nipah virus devastating the pig industry, non-acceptance of Chinese High School Certificates or criticism of too many Chinese movies in Astro. In fact he is ready and willing to accept erosion in Chinese rights and mortgaging of Chinese future to maintain his personal position, a fine example being his declaration that TAR college will not be upgraded to university status. Ling is the towering epitome of the village headman who has been bought over by outside colonizers to keep the natives in line. Besides a genius at doing nothing, his other skills include the fine art of carrying the Prime Minister's balls on whom he depends to protect his position and keep a lid on his corruption. It must be a bitter irony to the Chinese that this bogus leader who claims to represent them is elected from a Malay dominated electorate. To Mahathir he is the perfect running dog in the so-called partnership of the Barisan Nasional - a convenient eyewash for power sharing and an apologist for Umno, never asking for anything for the Chinese and never critical of any government policies against Chinese interests. A more putrid, self-serving politician you could not find.

 *10. Samy Vellu*

Architect of the MAIKA Telecom shares scandal, Samy Vellu proves that corruption pays in Malaysia

Samy Vellu is to the Indians what Ling Liong Sik is to Chinese. After 21 years of Samy Vellu at the helm of the MIC, Indians remain economically backward and left behind in Malaysia's economic growth. Trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty, they have no financial, commercial or industrialized structure, marginalised in every economic field and in danger of becoming an underclass. Despite the burden on the low income, Samy Vellu goes round the country opening and justifying road tolls, a super-apologist for the rich cronies set on milking the public and derisively berating those who criticize the proliferation of toll booths. His shinning achievement is the extension of Kamunting Berhad's concession to collect toll at Jalan Kuching in exchange for nothing despite the concession period having expired and company having recouped many times its original investment. An let's not forget Samy Vellu's role in hijacking MAIKA's Telecom shares to three unknown companies controlled by his proxy in 1990 thus depriving the agency entrusted with uplifting Indians of an estimated RM70 million in profits.

Although Samy Vellu has done nothing for his race and got rich in the process just like Ling, he is a little more outspoken than the timorous Ling who would never stick an inch of his political neck out for the people he represents. Ling must certainly be ranked above Samy in evil as he betrays a larger group of people (30% of the population as against 10%) and he has enriched himself far more than Samy.

 *11. Rahim Noor*

The Chief of Police turned out to be a lawless thug but he beat one prisoner too many

Rahim Noor was the Inspector-General of Police serving Mahathir faithfully by misusing the police force until he was forced to resign after beating up a deputy prime minister in prison. After shaming the police force and the nation he did not resign until his repulsive action was about to be exposed by a Royal Commission of Inquiry. And let's have no illusion that this Royal Commission was convened voluntarily by Mahathir to find out the truth. In true Mahathiran fashion he tried to protect the guilty and the corrupt until the insistent demands by the opposition and international critics were so great that there was no choice but to sacrifice Rahim Noor. But to this day the shame of the nation is not redeemed as Rahim Noor is treated with kid's glove by the corrupt judicial system and will no doubt escape with a wrist slap.

Rahim Noor is certainly a willing evil minion of Mahathir. Under him the police were cruel and oppressive, sometimes summarily executing criminals and beating up people in detention to the point of death. The Special Branch was in charge of fabricating evidence from the dungeon of their confession factory with Muslim intellectual Munawar Anees as their most famous guest. Through Munawar's affidavit we are given a horrifying glimpse of torture Malaysian style. Rahim is not ranked higher on the evil scale because he is no longer in a position to influence matters. Also the behaviour of the police does not seem to have improved with his resignation which means that his influence wasn't that great.

 *12. Ummi Hafilda Ali*

She plays a virgin in the light but needs no urging in the night

"Youthful feminine face hiding rotten starving soul" best describes Ummi Hafilda Ali. When she declared brazenly in a press statement that she was still a virgin in denial of media gossip about her, headlines ricocheted from that bold declaration and the nation gasped in disbelief. But subsequent testimony in court during Anwar's trial by a man who was intimate with her in London show the deeply deceitful nature of Ummi and the manner in which she can shamelessly lie through her teeth in public.

Disowned by her family and revealed as a scheming, manipulative, evil woman who would stop at nothing to lie and cheat her way through life, she was the ideal person to be used by corrupt politicians in their conspiracy to destroy Anwar. They found in her the raw evil with the stomach to make vile accusations against an innocent man and even to draw the hapless Azizan Abu Bakar into her web of deceit. Totally without conscience and thinking nothing of shamelessly promoting her wicked lies in public, she was a cesspool of depravity and immorality which made her the darling of like-minded Umno politicians. Her declaration that she was motivated by religion and loyalty rings hollowly in the recesses of her empty soul.

Whatever her motivation for taking part in the conspiracy to destroy a deputy prime minister who was fallen for standing in the way of corruption and cronyism, history has assured Ummi a place in the dark halls of shame after her brief moment of notoriety in a Malaysia made morally hollow by corrupt and evil men.

So here we have a rogue's gallery of the worse that Malaysia gave birth to. It comes as no surprise that most of the corruption has stemmed from the font of an evil, Mahathir himself. Evil men are useful and necessary to Mahathir. They will willingly do his bidding no matter how odious and they can be blackmailed on their past if they ever have a change of heart. So it is evil, corrupt men who fluorish under his rule and advance to positions of power and wealth. Working in co-operation with each other under the tyrant, they ensure that Mahathir, his family and his cronies continue the feast of corruption, cronyism and nepotism at the expense of ordinary Malaysians.

Eyeing China Food Supply

*Britain suddenly announced big news about China!  The whole world is silent ...*

 Mingya Reading 4 days ago

Today, the circle of friends was swiped by this article!

 Because, someone asked a question:

How does China produce so much food enough to feed 1.4 billion people?  Is it imported or self-sufficient?

Cambridge University doctor Janus Dongye's answer is absolutely stunning!

 The following is the text:

Seeing is believing.  Open your Google Earth and see what is going on in China from the sky. Western media generally do not report these things.

I will show you which ones are worth paying attention to.

 Include the following coordinate points:

 Location 1: Ningde Port, Fujian

 (119 ° 57'45.2 "east longitude, 26 ° 43'02.8" north latitude)

Our first stop is the coastal area of Fujian Province.

Zoom in a bit on the map to see millions of houses and cages floating on the sea.

From Zhejiang to Guangdong, over 1,000 miles of coastline, you can see similar cages almost everywhere.

 what is that?

 That is China's "seafood farm"!

Rather than going wild to catch wild seafood, it is better to keep seafood in the same place.  In this way, you can raise fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, shellfish, etc. with less effort, and earn more money.

Chinese farmers are not only aquaculture, but any open water, reservoirs, rivers and lakes can raise aquatic products.

Imagine how many tens of fish or crabs are kept in each cage.

What is the consumption of seafood in China?

It is estimated that the total annual global seafood consumption is 144 million tons. China is the largest seafood consumer, accounting for 45% of the global total with 65 million tons, followed by the European Union (13 million tons), Japan (7.4 million tons)  United States (7.1 million tons) and India (4.8 million tons).

China and India have similar populations, but China ’s seafood consumption is 12 times that of India—although India ’s geographic conditions are more ideal, it is located in a tropical region rich in fishery resources and surrounded by warm oceans on both sides.

Of the 65 million tons of seafood consumed annually in China, only 15 million tons are fished, and the remaining 50 million tons are from aquaculture farms.  90% of seafood in Japan comes from fishing.  Thanks to seafood farming, ordinary Chinese people can buy cheap seafood, and they can afford seafood every day.  Below is the reunion dinner of a typical Chinese family. You can see that many ingredients are seafood.

The price of such a seafood dinner for the whole family is only around US $ 120.

 Location 2: Nanxun, Huzhou, Zhejiang

 (120 ° 09'02.9 "east longitude, 30 ° 46'14.5" north latitude)

The next stop is the flood plains along the Yangtze River, Taihu Lake and Qiantang River.  The abundant fresh water resources have brought a lot of nutrients in the upper reaches of the river, making this area a land of fish and rice for 100 million people.  This is also one of the areas with the highest population density in China.  It is more similar to the flood plains of Bangladesh, West Bengal, India, and Saigon, Vietnam.

Compared with other densely populated floodplains, what unusual things have the Chinese done?

Compared with planting rice, farming aquatic products can be sold at a higher price and get rich faster.  Closer, you will see there are millions of fish ponds here.  In addition to fish ponds, you can also see many trees planted around.

These trees are mulberry trees and are used to raise silkworms.  For two thousand years, the Chinese in this area have developed many highly complex and sustainable agricultural ecosystems.  One of the most famous is the Sanji fish pond, see the picture below:

Today, this system has developed into multiple recycling of the same land:

But to raise more fish in the fish pond, you have to have an aeration pump.  It can inject air into the water, so that the fish have enough oxygen to maintain breathing.  In the picture below, the white dot in the middle of each fish pond is an aeration pump.

To install an aeration pump in each fish pond, it must be energized everywhere.  How to supply power to the aerator pump?  Of course it is a solar panel.

As you can see from Google Maps, solar-powered fish ponds (referred to as "photovoltaic fish ponds") have begun to replace Sanchi fish ponds.  Some areas of Huzhou have already installed solar panels.

The picture above shows the traditional Sanchi fish pond on the left and the photovoltaic fish pond on the right

From this point, you can understand why China can produce 84% of the world ’s silk and 66% of the freshwater fish, and solar power accounts for 25.8% of the global total.  In rural areas of Zhejiang and Jiangsu, people eat fish almost every day.  Some people say that this is the secret of their brains.

Another ecological cycle is lotus root and fish farming.

In some fish ponds, you can grow vegetables at the same time, the most common of which is lotus root.  China ’s annual lotus root production reaches 11 million tons, accounting for 90% of the world ’s total output and 60% of the world ’s exports.  Not only Chinese people love lotus roots, but South Korea, Japan and Vietnam are also big importers of lotus roots.

The third ecological cycle is mustard-bee-fish and shrimp.

The same method can also be used to grow rape.

Location 3: Duotian Town, Xinghua City, Jiangsu Province

 (119 ° 51'50.4 "east longitude, 32 ° 56'51.9" north latitude)

There is no road here, you have to take a boat to travel through it.  It is precisely because of this ecosystem that China has become the number one producer of rapeseed oil in the world, with production accounting for 22% of the global total.

With rapeseed, beekeeping can be achieved on a large scale.  China's honey production accounts for 30% of the world's total.

In fact, 1/3 of the honey consumed in the United States comes directly or indirectly from China.  In order to avoid tariffs, Chinese honey exporters first export to India, the Philippines and Malaysia, then re-label them locally to local products, and then export to the United States.  Other industries have similar operations.

In addition to honey, it is also a famous hairy crab producing area in China.  The price of hairy crabs can be sold to about 60 US dollars per kilogram, which can only be eaten by middle-income people.

Location 4: Shouguang City, Shandong Province

 (118 ° 44'14.7 "longitude east, 36 ° 44'15.9" north latitude)

The next thing to go is the Shandong Plain.

Zooming in a bit, we can find millions of "flashing" huts on the plain.  Look around, they are everywhere.

 what is this?

It turned out to be a vegetable and fruit greenhouse that controls temperature and humidity.

In the greenhouse, vegetables and fruits can be cooked more than a year regardless of the season.  This means that the output of vegetables and fruits is several times higher than traditional farmland.

For example, lettuce growing in a greenhouse takes 52 days from sowing to harvesting, so that seven rounds can be planted a year, which is seven times more efficient.

In addition, farmers are also required to install IoT monitoring systems in the greenhouses.  Through re-education and training, farmers learned to use mobile phones to monitor the internal environmental parameters of the greenhouse, such as carbon dioxide concentration, light intensity, soil temperature and so on.

Data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization show that China's vegetable production and consumption are around 700 million tons, which is 40% of the world's total.  Most of the nationals of India are vegetarians, and the arable land area is larger than that of China, but the national output of vegetables and fruits is 180 million tons, and China is 3.8 times its.

With greenhouse vegetables, Chinese people enjoy more varieties of vegetables than anywhere else in the world, and the prices are even cheaper.

The output of every vegetable in China is almost the first in the world, and the gap with the second place is not small.  Many East Asian-specific vegetables are not even on the list, such as leeks.
